VMA’s Make a Comeback

This year’s MTV Video Music Awards were the first truly memorable VMAs in a while.

The show kicked off the VMAs with a red carpet that welcomed yet another attention-grabbing outfit by wacky, lovable Lady GaGa, who arrived with her date Kermit the Frog. Other notable entrances included Taylor Swift, who rode in on a white horse-drawn carriage, and P!nk, who arrived on an FDNY fire truck with her husband, motorcross racer Carey Hart.

The show itself began with a touching, edgy, tear-jerking, exciting tribute to Michael Jackson introduced by Madonna. She shared a touching story about a friendly date with Michael. A dance montage of Michael’s greatest hits followed: “Thriller”, “Bad”, “Smooth Criminal”, and finally, “Scream!” The iconic video played on a giant screen as dozens of dancers joined Janet Jackson in dancing alongside her brother Michael on stage just as she did in the video.

VMA host Russell Brand also made a very cool entrance as Katy Perry sang Queen’s “We Will Rock You” with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

It wouldn’t be a blog about the VMAs without mentioning Kanye West’s outburst when Beyoncé didn’t win Best Female Video. The award went to Taylor Swift, to the dismay of both Kanye and others. West interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech, proclaiming “I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time…”

Well, Beyoncé did win the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year, which she’d told MTV VJ Sway earlier was the award she’d most like to win. Once onstage, Beyoncé said, “I’d like for Taylor to come out and have her moment…” and greeted Taylor with a hug.

Taylor then joked “Maybe we could try this again…” and thanked her supporters and fans.

Kanye has since apologized, after fans and famous folk alike had not-so-nice things to say to him. Taylor accepted his apology.

Other big winners were Lady GaGa for Best New Artist, T.I. for Best Male V ideo (He out beat Eminem and Kanye, but couldn’t be there to accept the award because of a prison sentence), and Britney Spears who upset the “leading lady battle” for Best Pop Video. She won for “Womanizer” and accepted the award via satellite from her tour.

The performances almost always outshine the Moonmen winners, and this year was no exception. Lady GaGa was easily one of the best and most memorable performers of the night with a blood gushing, chandelier crashing rendition of her latest single, “Paparazzi.” P!nk performed her single “Sober” suspended from a high wire, doing acrobatic spins and flips — singing well all the while. Beyonce did a mass version of “Single Ladies” that took a while to get going, but finally kicked off at the end. B’s husband Jay-Z had one of the coolest entrances to a performance, as cameras captured him entering Radio City Music Hall from his car and followed him all the way to the stage, where he met with Alicia Keys to perform their latest single, “Empire State of Mind”.

The VMAs are always a spectacle, and Sunday night was no exception. The 2009 MTV VMAs were the best Video Music Awards the network has had in years.

  1. Great job Kelcie :) I was not able to watch the VMA’s because I removed my TV to focus more on school. So I was doing homework while ceremony was on. However, since going to school Monday and after hearing what Kanye did I kind of wish I would have watched some part of the VMA’s. The nerve of some people. I think that you that Kanye’s rudeness was no exception. Then again, after hearing more about the VMA’s after reading your blog and listening to more comments today about the program. I now wish I watch the show.
Like that you are using the blog for up to date news Kelcie.

  2. The VMAs were strange this year, I think. Kanye’s random rudeness, Jack Black randomly praying to Satan, Lil Mama (eww) randomly disturbing Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ closing perfomance, something was not right. Lady Gaga’s performance was entertaining but I loved Katy Perry’s opener. The guitar was awesome and sounded amazing, I wanted to be right there…
And poor Taylor, at least her dress was amazing! I hope next year things make sense, and Tokio Hotel comes…

  3. Kayne West is the most despicable excuse for a human being i have ever witnessed! HOW DARE he have the AUDACITY to run on stage and take the mic from someone receiving an award! He should have not only been kicked out, but charged as well! I didn’t get to see the entire thing, but i loved your review! it was so professional! I can’t wait to check out the re-runs.

Sidenote: Did you hear about how Barak Obama even side Kayne is Jack@$$! TAKE THAT KANYE! EVEN THE PRESIDENT HATES YOU!

  4. It’s kinda hard to tell, but the grey words are actually links to all the performances. How I love the series of tubes.

  5. Good job Kelcie!! I totally agree…this year was the first time that I have ever sat down and watched the entire show. I was so upset about Kanye’s outburst, ugh I don’t even want to remember it.! Some people do things to get publicity and I think that was his purpose. I hope no one buys his cd. Then maybe he would close his mouth! But on a brighter note, I absoultely loved Janet’s performance. I didnt expect her to come out.! The VMA’s were great this year…I cant wait to watch re runs!! =)

  6. Nice review! Yeah, the randomness of Kanye West is the winner scoop for that event.
