Smells Like No Spirit

During Homecoming Week, the vast majority of my fellow students dressed as little kids, cartoon characters, Michael Jackson and in ridiculously tacky outfits each day. Some of my friends even went so far as to create their own Homecoming Week themes, like Hot Secretary Day and Goth Day, to name a few.
I, however, continued to wear my usual casual clothes, like any other week. I didn’t stand out as a rebel, but that was fine with me. I was content with making a statement within myself.
I don’t have school spirit.
There isn’t some deep, dark reason why. I’ve just never felt very excited or passionate about my school. When I first arrived, the upperclassmen didn’t seem to feel proud or even the least bit excited to be here. It could be that their I’m-stuck-here-for-how-ever-many-more years attitude rubbed off on me as well.
My lack of school spirit may also be because the central focus of my school seems to be sports, primarily football. I care about writing, and technology—academics, not football. The only time a bit of spirit runs through my school is when the football team is gearing up for a big game—and that’s only when they’re winning. Whenever the administration attempts to conjure up school spirit, it feels like it’s for ulterior motives, like attendance at a televised pep rally or football game.
For the most part, school isn’t a horrible experience. I get along with most of my teachers. I like my classes. I enjoy the company of my friends. But school spirit just isn’t something I can get into.
School spirit isn’t something you can just conjure up at a pep rally. School spirit needs to be built up. Maybe more opportunities for the student body to learn about what makes our school so great will instill more pride in us.

I absolutely love my high school. I love the kids, the teachers, the diversity and even the conflicts.
Up until this year, we hadn’t made AYP (average yearly progress standards) in over five years and were in danger of having the state come in and take over. And our football team is one of the worst. We’ve won one game all season.
Regardless, every Friday, I’m in the front of the stands, cheering on my favorite players and screaming Campbell Spartan cheers through my big blue megaphone. So many of my friends give me baffled looks when I talk about how much I love Campbell. I am the ultimate pessimist and often anticipate the worst in a given situation. But, I guess the reason I’m so annoyingly optimistic about our school is because I see the good in it, despite our numerous flaws and mistakes.
Besides, our school won’t get better if we don’t believe it can.
Raya, I truly admire the spirit you have for your school! My oh my what that must take. I’m not going to sit here and say I absolutely hate my school, but between my first year there and recent events, I still can’t say I love it. I just can’t. There are a lot of pluses to my school though. It could be worse.
You sound like me! Honestly, my school has about as much school spirit as a graveyard. Im a pretty excited person though, but if you ask me, i think I’m just at the wrong school…
GO DRUID HILLS RED DEVILS!
(ill be with you soon!)
Tell you the truth; I don’t have much school spirit what so ever. I guess because I’m a senior I’m just ready to leave . The only school spirit i have is being Vice President of the technology club and and playing tennis..
