Movie Review

“Bridge to Terabithia” directed by Gabor Csupo

Rating: Five out of Five Stars

“Bridge to Terabithia” is a movie based on the children’s book of the same name written by Katherine Paterson. While I was enticed to see this movie based on the promotional trailer’s eye-popping special effects, I was a bit skeptical because I wasn’t sure if it was for my age level. After all, the book’s characters are fifth graders and I thought the tale of youth would no longer affect me.

But within the first 30 minutes of the movie I was proven wrong, as I was completely drawn into the story of a friendship that emerges between Jesse (Josh Hutcherson), a boy who aspires to be the fastest kid in his school, and Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb), a new girl who beats him and every other boy in the race.

What starts off as a rivalry turns into a moving reflection on the beauty of imagination and the innocence of childhood, when during their play time Jesse and Leslie create a fictional world — Terabithia — where they reign as King and Queen.

The world of Terabithia includes many creatures and monsters that are brought to life by amazing computer animation, and these images work seamlessly with a plot that features many twists and turns. I was captivated by the visuals, as well as the strong, sympathetic lead characters and creative dialogue. There also are many wild action adventures along the way. As the movie unfolded I was moved by the many funny and sad moments, including a final tragedy that still resonates in me.

I really enjoyed this movie, and I recommend it to everyone, no matter your age. If you’re like me and haven’t read the book, after seeing it on screen you’ll wish you had.
