Web Time Wasters
Hey Webmen and Webwomen, I’m here to give you the stuff you love: Semi-useless content to fill up your hours of down time. Seriously though, as a seasoned time-waster, I give myself the duty of telling you this is only the tip of the iceberg. The Internet is overloaded with amusing and weird stuff, and I’m trying to point you to the best.
Here’s what I’ve found for this month:
• www.rottentomatoes.com: This is an awesome movie and video game Web site that collects all the reviews and previews from every reputable critic in the United States. Not only that, they give a composite score to all the movies, games and DVDs so you don’t have to worry about if that one review you read was on target or not. Meanwhile, if you’re a budding filmmaker or just a cinephile (movie-lover), there are forums to discuss everything from the latest Harry Potter movie to how to write a screenplay.
• www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS87r0YZJb8: This YouTube spot that introduces a hilarious new rap act, “The Kings of Myspace.” It’s one of the funniest – and cleverest – videos I have seen on YouTube in a very long time. In the off chance that you haven’t seen it, you must watch it – especially if you’re a Myspace freak.
• www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTBN0DioYEA: Black History Month may have passed, but this simple video teaches a valuable lesson: “Don’t Use the N Word.”
• www.nick.com/avatarshort (enter codeword “koh”): Given to me by a friend who received it from a friend, I am passing this on to you. Isn’t that the way all these things should be? It’s a very funny short based on the anime “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” You guys know how I love my Avatar; watch this and you’ll see just how much (which may or may not be a good thing). Let’s just say that love is in the air. (For Avatar fanatics: It features the new voice of Uncle Iroh.)
Now, I know that I’m not the only teen Internet addict in metro Atlanta, so if you know of any cool sites or videos that you’ve forwarded to friends or played over and over again, send them to me so I share them with the tens of thousands of teens who read VOX. We all need something to do when we’re procrastinating about our math homework. Send those suggestions c/o Web Time Wasters to vox@voxrox.org and I’ll be sure to include the best ones in an upcoming column.
