Art and Poetry

By Jasmine Gallman

Here’s a secret that, personally, makes my stomach curl as a self-proclaimed artist: Anybody can draw — and not just homicidal stick figures banished to the sides of a chemistry notebook, mind you — but actual well-drawn images, flesh, curves and all! How astonishing! How amazing! How utterly unfair! Art, whether it is an outburst of raw emotion and effort or just a sporadic stroke of unintended genius, serves as a testament of what lies beneath the surface, that untapped inspiration, that wonderful underlying message. Of course art, is not just limited to visual means, it can be manipulated and transformed into lines of poetry — words carefully crafted and placed together for the greatest impact, capturing readers and taking them through a world of a silent, yet powerful voice. No glowering judge appoints himself to sit next to every poet to make sure the writer’s words fit his discriminating taste. Poets, professional or not, can create in peace, no matter the topic or tone. With that said, welcome to VOX’s 4th annual art, poetry and prosee issue!
