Summer at VOX

Summer at VOX looks a little different this year. We're focusing on training and skill-building for our teen staff — as well as putting together our back-to-school issue, of course.

To that end, we are hosting a series of fun and informative workshops and field trips covering a range of topics. Workshops are open to writers, photographers and designers on the VOX staff. Space is limited to 15 (except for the field trip) so be sure sign up early.

Garageband Workshop - I
1-2:30 p.m. June 24

This Storycorps editing workshop is for participants who recorded with Storycorps. Our very own intern extraordinaire Stanley will show you the ins and outs of editing with Garageband. See you there!

Blogging
1-3 p.m. June 30

Writer, memoirist and blogger Jessica Handler will teach the tips and techniques for effective blogging. Learn how to keep your writing tight, bright and fully linked to build readership and a fan base. Learn more about Jessica.

What's the Big Idea? From Topic to Story
1-3 p.m. July 6
Got ideas? Then join us for this dynamic workshop led by Rebecca Burns. Learn to focus your ideas to create compellingly tight stories. Rebecca Burns was editor in chief of Atlanta magazine from 2002-2009 and is now the Digital Strategy Director of Emmis Publishing. Learn more about Rebecca.

Journalism 1A: Sourcing
1-3 p.m. July 14

Take your story to the next level with Pulitzer-prize winning journalist Hank Klibanoff. Learn how to make your story more objective and widely appealing with interviews, facts, and outside sources. This exciting workshop lays the foundation for reporting on all types of stories.

Turner Broadcasting Field Trip
10 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. July 19

Discover the wide, wide world of news and entertainment as we tour CNN. We'll meet here at 9:30 a.m. and walk over to the center. We will learn about newsgathering and the variety of jobs in the field, listen to guest speakers, shadow employees and be treated to lunch. This is a must-do for all aspiring writers and artists.

Interview Like a Pro
1-3 p.m. July 22

Get the skills to be a professional, authoritative interviewer! Learn how to ask unique questions that will elicit insightful answers for that truly one-of-a-kind article. This workshop will be led by our fabulous intern Kelcie. Don't miss this!

Youth Radio
1-3 p.m. July 28

Come record your news stories and experiences for Youth Radio and a chance for your commentary to be aired on WABE 90.1 FM during Weekend Edition Saturday. This amazing recording workshop, led by Joe Hirsch, is an annual tradition at VOX and one you'll want to be part of. Save the date.

Writing Arts & Entertainment Reviews
1-3 p.m. Aug. 4

Whether you're reviewing a new exhibit, performance or CD, there are tools every writer should have in the kit. This hands-on, highly entertaining workshop will be led by music critic Sonia Murray. Murray will take you through the steps for writing a review and interviewing rising stars and celebs.

Learn Illustrator
1-3 p.m. Aug. 3

VOX designer and writer Stanley will cover the fundamentals of working in Illustrator at this hands-on workshop. Practice creating movement and adding interest to your art or layout with these Adobe tools.
