Mission
Since 1993, Atlanta-area teens from diverse backgrounds have joined VOX to develop skills, express themselves effectively and build a strong community.
Our Objectives
- VOX fills an information void by creating a free venue for us teens to share our stories, ideas and creativity with our peers. VOX programs include the publishing of a BY teens, FOR teens newspaper and Web site, the creation and updating of an online teen resource guide, and peer-led community outreach efforts to teach journalism and leadership.
- VOX teaches us academic, vocational and social skills to lead successful, independent lives. We learn both basic and advanced techniques needed to excel in a variety of professional careers, as well as how to work in teams, become active in our communities and use discerning judgment about what we see, read and hear in the media.
- VOX offers us a forum for expressing ourselves in positive ways, coping with difficult situations and celebrating our achievements. Because we raise our teen voices, our teen audience identifies with our stories and opinion, learns valuable lessons and often makes positive changes as a result of what they read.
- VOX opens doors to potential careers for us. By working with mentors in communications and other fields, we learn professional skills, build positive connections with adults and experience the world of work.
- VOX builds bridges between those of us who are traditionally isolated from one another. Our teen staff crosses the boundaries of geography, ethnicity, age, economics and religion.
- VOX alerts policy makers and educators to our perspectives on critical issues of the day, and we have opportunities to raise our voices in other media, including the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and National Public Radio.
