Jasmine Gallman
When you first look at Jasmine, it’s understandable that you immediately think to yourself, “Great, another emo kid.” With the black clothes, My Chemical Romance CDs, and quiet disposition, of course you’d think Jasmine would be the type to thrash around in a mosh pit with heavy eye-lined, swoop haired teenagers all screaming about how no one understands. Then you realize that Jasmine almost always seems to have a little smirk on her face. As if she’s actually “happy”.
Jasmine (or “Jam”, as her friends call her) was born in Alaska, but moved around until she relocated with her mother to Atlanta in the middle of 5th grade. She now attends North Atlanta High School, “the gayest homophobic school” in Atlanta, Jasmine and her close group of friends (all with three-letter nicknames) enjoy going to the movies, throwing ice at each other, and just “fooling around”.
At school, Jasmine most enjoys her Chinese class, because, “we do anything but Chinese.” Instead of vocabulary and conjugating, she’ll wisely spend her time dancing and gossiping in the back of the classroom. She also has a love for art; in her drawings you can see the influence Sailor Moon has had on her, but she mixes that innocent like quality of Serena with slightly menacing themes. Even though she is fascinated by “the dark aspects of the human mind”, Jasmine doesn’t consider herself an emo kid. “I’m not fashionable enough,” she says.
Taking a closer look, you wouldn’t consider Jasmine emo, either. With that ever-present smirk, an obvious love for her art and friends, you might even assume that she has nothing to be “emo” about. |
